Update: Longboat Key reopens to residents

Longboat Key has reopen to residents as of 4 p.m. today, town officials announced.

Residents are reminded they will need proof of residency in order to get back on the island. 

An email from Susan Phillips, assistant to the town manager, details the challenges the town faces as it recovers from damage sustained during Hurricane Irma.

Downed power lines are the biggest problem as Longboat prepares for residents to return following a mandatory evacuation, but Florida Power and Light is on the island and working to repair any issues.

Some roads remain blocked, including Bayview Drive, where a downed tree may prohibit residents from returning until Tuesday. Other roads may only be partially passable because of debris.

“It won’t be perfect, but you will be able to come home,” the email states.

Water service has been restored on the island, but Longboat is under a mandatory boil water notice until the water has been tested as safe to drink. Boiling water for one minute is sufficient to ensure it is safe.

The town government will be open tomorrow.
