Unlike all of my friends growing up, I was never much of a sports gal. I tried all the suburban staples — soccer, tennis, swimming, gymnastics, you name it. None of them brought me the joy I felt when I first stepped on a stage.
From my breakout role as Mary Mary Quite Contrary in the “Tales of Mother Goose” in fifth grade to my five seconds of fame (a “solo,” if you will) in my high school dance team’s senior year competition routine, performing is how I found confidence — a high achievement for a young, lanky girl who never failed to disappoint anyone who assumed she was good at basketball.
When I think back to some of my earliest writing memories of crafting “songs” (new lyrics to Disney tunes) and drafting a “play” (a cliche fairytale my friends performed at my 8th birthday party), it seems as if I were always meant to combine my passion for writing with my love for the arts.
Now, the Observer has given me that opportunity.
I’m honored to be the new Managing Editor of Arts & Entertainment for this publication — but I have big shoes to fill. My predecessor, Nick Friedman, is not only incredibly talented, he was an invaluable mentor to me. I hope I can be even half of the role model to my replacement as Nick was to me.
During my time on the Black Tie beat I learned so much about this community and the generous souls who live here. I will miss the warm smiles, loving hugs and sweet words of encouragement I received as I tried to navigate the complex social scene of Sarasota the past year.
Thank you to everyone who helped this unglamorous Midwesterner find a place in a chic community of beautiful people, inside and out. I’m not sure I’ll ever find a city with more big-hearted individuals.
I’m sad to see Nick go, but the opportunity his departure allows me is inconceivable. I’m thrilled to take on this role, and I hope to make that little girl in the Mary Mary Quite Contrary costume proud.
