‘Nine’

“Nine” is a story of a life gone awry. Guido Contini is torn between his wife, his mistress and the star he needs for his big break. Under the pressure of his love life and trying to make a great movie, he runs off to Venice — and nothing changes. Only his past can save Guido. This Manatee Players shows runs through Jan. 28.

 

Royal Philharmonic Orchestra

The Sarasota Concert Association brings this performance by the Royal Philharmonic. The show includes classical staples such as Weber’s “Overture to Der Freischütz,” Beethoven’s Violin Concerto and Dvorák’s Symphony No. 7.

 

‘Last Train to Nibroc’

8 p.m. at Venice Theatre, 140 Tampa Ave. W., Venice

The first of a trilogy, this play takes place on a 1940 train headed east. On board is a small-town girl from Kentucky and a young serviceman who was recently discharged due to epilepsy. When they connect, they discover a great deal about one another and life at large. Runs through Jan. 28.

 

‘Beyond a Joke’

Six people have died as the result of hapless accidents at Jane and Andrew’s house in the country. And when their daughter’s boyfriend visits for the weekend, he’s led to believe the deaths were caused by more menacing circumstances than they let on. Runs through Jan. 28

 

Friday, Jan. 12

Tommy May: Emerging Spaces Opening Reception

Sip a cocktail, listen to some live music and get to know artist Tommy May as he talks about his work, inspired by California, Martha’s Vineyard and Marfa, Texas. 530 Burns will be donating 10% of all proceeds to The Roskamp Institute until Jan. 13.

 

Don’t Miss: Shawn Wayans

Beginning as an actor in 1989 in his brother’s film, “I’m Gonna Get You Sucka,” Shawn Wayans is now known for his roles in comedic hits such as “Little Man,” “White Chicks,” and “Scary Movie.” Now he’s bringing laughs to Sarasota audiences Jan. 12-13.

Venice Symphony Concert: ‘Emotional Landscapes’

Take a musical trip north to a winter wonderland with Tchaikovsky’s “Snow Maiden Suite.” This performance also includes Debussy’s “La Mer” and Richard Strauss’s “Four Last Songs,” performed by soprano soloist D’Ana Lombardo. This concert also takes place at 3:30 p.m. Jan. 13.

 

Masterworks 3: ‘Firsts’

Composers hold their first symphonies and concerti near and dear, and these firsts by Brahms and Sibelius are no exception. Pianist Lukáš Vondráček will take on  Brahms’ Piano Concerto No. 1, and audiences will also hear Sibelius’s First Symphony, a heartfelt tribute to his native Finland. Runs through Jan. 14.

 

Nik's Pick: Tango Fire

International Tango superstar German Cornejo’s dance troupe, The Tango Fire Company of Buenos Aires, is about to heat things up in Sarasota. Come see authentic Argentinian tango dancing by several of Argentina’s most talented and even a few World Tango Champions.

‘Once’

This “musical play,” as Marty Fugate, the Observer’s theater critic, calls it, centers on the story of a nameless Irish musician (aka “Guy”) who meets a nameless Czech pianist (aka “Girl) and gets back his drive for musical fame. Runs through Jan. 19.

Classical Guitarist Xavier Jara

Kick off GuitarSarasota’s 12th season with a concert by Xavier Jara, winner of the Guitar Foundation of America 2016 International Classical Guitar Competition. Jara comes to Sarasota as part of his prize: a 50-concert world tour that also includes a performance at Carnegie Hall.

 

Jazz Quartet featuring Fred Johnson

Acclaimed percussionist Fred Johnson has toured with everyone from B.B. King to Aretha Franklin, and now he’s bringing his talents to Sarasota as part of his latest project in the Tampa Bay area that aims to bring all walks of life together via music.

An Afternoon of Free Circus Music and Circus Acts

Windjammers Unlimited, a group of musicians who study and perform circus music, will take on Circus City not only for its annual convention, but for a community concert benefiting Sailor Circus. Members of the longest-running youth circus will perform for an hour to the music of the Windjammers.

 

Monday, Jan. 15

Music Mondays: Warren Jones

Pianist and conductor Warren Jones’ music career has taken him around the world, including to state dinners at the White House. He’ll take part in Sarasota Institute for Lifelong Learning’s Music Mondays to talk about what it’s like to be a successful collaborative pianist. (Takes place again at 3 p.m. Jan. 15 at Venice Presbyterian Church).

‘Morning After Grace’

Asolo Repertory Theatre takes on the subjects of love, loss and aging in this new comedy, which centers on main characters Angus and Abigail. Just strangers the day before, the two find themselves under the sheets on Angus’ couch after a funeral. Abigail is ready to take a chance at love, but Angus isn’t there yet — this story follows the journey that ensues. Runs through March 4.
