Married duo Jenny Kim-Godfrey (coloratura soprano) and Jonathan Godfrey (guitarist) form the musical group Corda Voce — Italian for “string voice.” Together, both performers contribute to a blend of cabaret, classical, jazz, and popular music that makes up their diverse repertoire, which is focused on songs not originally written for guitar.

 

Nik’s Pick: Open-Mic Poetry Reading

Sandy Pool, an award-nominated poet and professor of English and creative writing at New College of Florida, hosts this fun, creative evening for fans and writers of poetry. This event is not a competition, it’s an open-mic-style poetry reading open to poets of all levels. Come read poems you’ve written yourself or works by other poets you love.

Great Escapes 3: ‘Amadeus’

Musicians just wanna have fun. From Mozart to Bernstein, this program exposes the fascinating and sometimes shocking stories behind several famous musicians and their work. Experience a night of Schubert, Botessini, Liszt, Berlioz, Puccini and more with Sarasota Orchestra and guest conductor Stefan Sanders. Runs through Saturday.

 

‘Dance Makers’

Sarasota Contemporary Dance is “reaching new heights this year,” as its 12th season catch phrase implies. Be a part of this defining moment in the company’s history by experiencing the annual SCD concert, which will feature creative dance works by internationally acclaimed contemporary choreographers. ‘Driving Miss Daisy’

Manatee Players takes on a classic story with “Driving Miss Daisy,” which follows the relationship of an elderly white Jewish woman, Daisy Werthan, and her African-American chauffeur, Hoke Colburn, in the South from 1948 to 1973. Runs through Feb. 11.

Don’t Miss: Artist Spotlight: Mike Decker Design

Whether you’re enticed by the food, the beer or the art, this Calusa Brewing event will have something for everyone. Check out the work of local artist Mike Decker, whose designs are unique in their style of inlayed, mosaic wood carvings — and they’re of your favorite pop culture icons. Michael J Weiss Music will take the stage at 7 p.m. and Mouthole BBQ will also be selling its sweet meat at 6 p.m.

‘Moving Identities’

Sarasota Ballet is pushing the limits of gender and casting with its latest triple-bill production. Full of contemporary pieces — a departure from the company’s classical roots — the show will feature two ballets with split-gender casts, one of which is the traditionally all-male “Troy Game” by Robert North. Runs through Jan. 29.

 

Circus: Wandering City

Traveling string quartet Ethel is known for refusing to fit a specific type of music. The group’s affinity for modern, genre-defying storytelling caught the attention of The Ringling, which commissioned this group to write and perform an original piece to tell the story of the circus. Runs through Jan. 27.

 

‘Northside Hollow’

An emergency situation turns into a life-changing encounter between two strangers in this Urbanite Theatre production. After a coal miner is trapped in a deadly collapse, he connects with the first responder who finds him — and a conversation about mortality, acceptance and spirituality ensues. Runs through March 11.

 

Ellis Paul

Singer and songwriter Ellis Paul is much more than a musician. He’s an author, a former track star and ex-social work student who now identifies as a storyteller, using the medium of folk music to share his perception of the world.

St. Armands Winter Art Festival

Brooks + Scarpa ‘Ordinary and Extraordinary’ Opening Reception

“Ordinary And Extraordinary: Architecture of Heightened Awareness” is an exhibit created by Brooks + Scarpa, a collective of architects, designers and creative minds from Los Angeles who are dedicated to enhancing the human experience. A VIP reception will kick off the exhibit, which is free and runs through April 14.

Back Home Again, A Tribute to John Denver

Tom Becker, former member of the New Christy Minstrels pays tribute to one of music’s biggest stars in this evening of musical storytelling. Enjoy — and feel free to sing along to — favorite John Denver songs like “Country Roads,”  and “Rocky Mountain High.” Runs through Jan. 29.

Cleveland Orchestra
