Stefano Lonardo will be a senior next semester at Lakewood Ranch High. Lonardo is a starting offensive guard for the Mustangs, and new football coach Chris Culton has been impressed. "If everyone has the grit he has, we would be a state championship team," Culton said.
When did you start playing football?
When I was 10 and living in Cranston, R.I. I was not in the best shape, and football was something I could do to change that. My dad (Glen Lonardo) was the coach of the Chiefs youth team there, so I joined.
What is the appeal to you?
It gives you purpose. It gives you motivation. It also provides you with competition. You always have a chance to prove yourself and do your best.
What is your best skill?
My mindset. I'm not the best athlete, but I push myself no matter what. I love this game.
What is your favorite memory?
I moved to Lakewood Ranch before my freshman year, and my first year with the Mustangs I was fighting for a starting spot at center (on the freshman team). I made my first start against Manatee High, and we beat them 22-15. It was one of two wins that season, but it felt really good.
What was the biggest challenge?
Football in general. The strain it puts on your body and mind. Especially in Florida where you get the hottest weather possible (laughs). Taking the field on Fridays, there's no better feeling, but you have to make it through the week.
What is your favorite subject?
Science is fun. I like learning about animals and biology.
What is your favorite movie?
I'm a superhero guy, so I like all those types of movies. I like Marvel movies more than DC Comics ones, though.
What is your dream vacation?
Going to Italy. My family is from southern Italy, so I'd like to visit that region and see what it's like.
What is your biggest fear?
Not living up to my potential. Not being the best I can be. It's why I work as hard as I do. I might only have one year of football left. I have to make the most of it.
What is the best advice you have received?
My dad always says not to look at the scoreboard, just do the best you can do. Don't forget to have fun, too. That's what keeps you going.
Finish this sentence: "Stefano Lonardo is ... "
... A hard worker who loves this sport and who will leave everything on the field. I love this team.
