Ever wonder the story behind the statues on St. Armands? Sure, you can read the plaque, but this 90-minute tour will dive into the back story of these pieces, many of which date from the 1920s and were brought over from Europe by John and Mable Ringling. Art, history and legend-lovers will thrive on this fun, educational tour.

Join Sarasota Music Festival for a performance highlighting several musical treasures. This artist showcase will include Mozart’s Piano Quartet No. 2, Ligeti’s Six Bagatelles for Wind Quintet, and Shostakovich’s Piano Trio No. 2, the latter of which Sarasota Music Festival Director Jeffrey Kahane calls one of the most important chamber works of the 20th century.

Long week? End it with some laughs courtesy of seasoned comedian John Carfi, who has performed in comedy clubs, theaters and casinos throughout the United States. And through his years touring, he has developed his own unique style that grabs audiences’ attention.

 

Movie Night: ‘Forrest Gump’ at JDub’s

Don't Miss: "Carole’s Kings’

This unique, all- male tribute band will have you singing along to all of Carole King’s signature hits, such as “The Locomotion,” “You’ve Got a Friend” and “I Feel the Earth Move.” Jam-packed with humor, this salute to the iconic American composer will transport you back in time to when she was the queen of the radio. Runs through July 15.

Opening Night Performance and Celebration — Summer Circus Spectacular

Mix it up by enjoying this end-of-class show put on by theater and improv students. Like a bag of mixed nuts, you never know what you’re going to get from this dynamic show, which features everything from monologues to sketch comedy performed by Florida Studio Theatre Actors’ Lab students from theater performance, theater creation, and improv classes. Runs through Aug. 24.

 

‘Appalachian Spring’

Get in the pre-Fourth of July spirit with this performance, which encompasses the soul of America. This wide-ranging program showcases Sarasota Music Festival students and faculty artists performing works written after the composers were inspired by a different aspects of America. The program will begin with Darius Milhaud’s chamber ballet La Creation du monde. Continued by, Antonin Dvorak’s American Quintet, composed during his summer in Spillville, Iowa. As well as American composer Aaron Copland’s “Appalachian Spring” will be performed in its original version for small ensemble.

In many ways, Andy Warhol had a child-like vision of the world. Bring the whole family and channel his love of bright colors and his pop art style for this morning of creative fun. ‘Influence and Individuality'

This Sarasota Music Festival concert highlights the power of individuality. Composed in New York in 1919, Prokofiev’s Overture on Hebrew Themes was written for a Russian sextet whose members gave the composer a notebook of Jewish folk songs for inspiration. Praised for his “sparkling pianism and innate sense of partnership,” pianist Vijay Venkatesh, a 2017 festival alumnus, will star in Saint-Saens’ Piano Concerto No. 2. Tchaikovsky’s late Romantic masterpiece “Serenade for Strings,” has long been hailed as one of the composer’s greatest triumphs.

 

Big Night Out

Put on your dancing shoes and enjoy this performance by Big Night Out. This seven-piece dance band specializes in Latin, island and R&B music. A fierce horn section adds to the foot-tapping rhythm section and passionate bilingual vocals. The band was voted “Best Bilingual Cover Band” by the Weekly Planet and has been performing for more than 10 years in and around Florida.

Want to make your Sunday afternoon especially relaxing? Spend it indoors at this concert at Michael’s on the Bay featuring Diego Figueiredo and Chiara Izzi. Figueiredo is a Brazilian guitarist who uses unique interpretations that combine jazz, bossa nova and classical music, and Izzi is a vocalist described by Jazz Times as “a talent to be heard, admired and anticipated.”

 

MONDAY, JUNE 18

Nik's Pick: aact WorldFest 2018

Head to Venice for a full week of theater with The American Association of Community Theatre WorldFest. Enjoy performances by theater troupes from around the globe, including shows from Australia, Italy, Germany and 12 other countries. The week also will include administrative, performance and design and technical workshops. Runs through June 23.

Local political thriller author Sally Fernadez has published six books with Dunham Books in less than seven years. The hardworking author is stopping by the Selby Library to discuss her murder mystery “Climatized,” aka her fifth book that soon will be a movie, and her latest release, “The Beekeeper’s Secret.” The latter is the second in her series following the fictional smart-mouthed former CIA agent Max Ford.
