The Out-of-Door Academy senior Ian Martin is the boys lacrosse team captain. He scored four goals on March 9 in the Thunder's 9-8 win against Berkeley Prep.

When did you start playing lacrosse?

Six years ago, for the Lakewood Ranch Lightning. I played because my friend (ODA teammate Lucas McCloud) was on the team, and I fell in love with it.

What is the appeal to you?

I love how fast-paced it is. You have to make quick decisions with the ball and have great hand-eye coordination. It's a sport where a 5-foot-7, not super athletic guy like me can be successful (laughs).

What is your best skill?

Shooting. I've worked hard to get my shot dialed in like it is. It has taken hours of shooting at the wall to get here, but now it's my forte.

What is your favorite memory?

Beating Cardinal Mooney High two years ago. They're our rival and they were always beating us. We hit them hard and won when no one expected us to win. We showed that we weren't a bunch of scrubs.

What is the biggest challenge you have faced?

Injuries for sure. I've had ankle issues, knee issues, a concussion. The worst is my ankle. I sprained it my sophomore year and have sprained it every year since, but I play through it.

What are your goals for the year?

Winning a district championship for sure. I want to end my senior year on the right note.

What is your dream vacation?

Fishing for bonefish in the Seychelles. It's the best fly fishing spot in the world. That's always been a passion of mine.

What is a random fact about you?

I can cook. I've been learning for 10 years. My uncle (Danny Serio) is a chef and he has been giving me pointers.

What is the best advice you have received?

Be confident in everything. Having that aura around you will make people respect you. It's necessary on the lacrosse field. Girls like it, too.

Finish this sentence: "Ian Martin is ... "

... Loyal. I play in service of the team. My teammates will tell you I'd do a lot for those guys. I'm an honorable guy.
