One killed in car crash on Lakewood Ranch Boulevard

A head-on collision in Lakewood Ranch on Monday killed a 98-year-old passenger and sent the driver of another car to a Sarasota hospital.

Florida Highway Patrol investigators reported a 2014 Ford Escape, driven by Sarasota's Tara Berbit, was driving north in the southbound lanes of Lakewood Ranch Boulevard north of University Parkway. It collided with a southbound Hyundai Santa Fe near Endeavor Drive at 12:27 p.m.. That vehicle was driven by Lakewood Ranch's Thomas Yorke.

Yorke sustained minor injuries, but his passenger, 98-year-old Thelma Moore, died on scene.

Berbit was taken to Sarasota Memorial Hospital with serious injuries, the FHP report states.

Charges are pending, the FHP said.
