East County Athlete of the Week: Luke Lecroy

Luke Lecroy is a junior on the Lakewood Ranch High boys basketball team. The 6-foot-5, 180-pound Lecroy has drawn interest from Florida Gulf Coast University and Bethune-Cookman University, and coach Jeremy Schiller said he expects Lecroy to be an important contributor on this year's team. 

When did you start playing basketball?

Seven years ago. My grandfather (Donald Murphy) started me in the sport. 

What is the appeal to you?

It is fun to play, it is exciting. You get so much adrenaline going. Shooting hoops in general is just fun to do, and fast-paced games are great. 

What is your favorite memory?

My first dunk. It was in practice last year (on junior varsity), a two-handed slam. It felt awesome. 

What is your biggest challenge?

The grind in general. Getting up and going to practice every day. Forcing yourself to play even when you do not feel like it.

What are your goals for this season?

The team goal is getting as far as we can in the postseason. I do not have any personal goals. Whatever I can do to help the team, I am going to do. 

How does it feel to get collegiate interest before playing a varsity game?

It feels great. All the hard work I put in is paying off. I expected to be here when I started high school and now I am. 

What is your favorite TV show?

I like "Stranger Things" a lot. 

What is your dream vacation?

I want to go to Hawaii. I like the scenery there. 

What is the best advice you have received?

Just give it all you have got, every single time.
