Sebastian Aguirre is a senior boys swimmer at Lakewood Ranch High. He won the 100 butterfly (50.82) on Sept. 15 at the 20th Annual Tarpon Invite in Punta Gorda. His time is also a South County Regional Pool record, besting former Charlotte swimmer Hans Schroder's time of 51.71 set in 2014, and a meet record, previously set in 2008 by Venice High's Mark Cox (52.44).

When did you start swimming?

Eleven years ago at Lakewood Ranch YMCA. My mom (Sandra Aguirre) was an instructor there and she didn't want me sitting around during the summer with nothing to do, so she signed me up for swim class. I took off from there.

What is the appeal to you?

I love everything about it. You get up there on the blocks and just race. It's anyone's game, you have to do the best you can to get the win.

What is your best event?

The 100 and 200 butterfly are my best, but the high school season doesn't race the 200 much, so I focus on the 100. Butterfly has always been my best stroke.

What is your favorite memory?

Either this past Saturday (setting the record) or winning the county championship last year (as a team). I'll remember both for a long time.

What has been your biggest challenge?

Missing school due to meets and having to make up the work. You work after hours and make up tests. I've managed to deal with it and still have a good GPA (4.1 weighted, 3.8 unweighted).

What are your goals for this season?

I'd like to win districts and regionals in the 100 fly and take a crack at the state title, too. I'd like to get under a 48.99, because that's the Summer Junior Nationals cut, but winning in general would be great.

What is your favorite food?

Italian food in general. My favorite places are probably Carrabba's (Italian Grill) and Olive Garden.

What is your favorite TV show?

I've been watching a lot of "That '70s Show" lately.

What is your dream vacation spot?

I don't know. Somewhere relaxing with a nice beach, for sure.

What is your biggest fear?

Getting injured and not being able to compete in this sport anymore. That would suck.

What is the best advice you have received?

Always look forward. Whatever happened, happened. You have to keep going. This helps when you don't get the results you wanted after putting in the work. Keep pushing.

Finish this sentence: "Sebastian Aguirre is ... "

... A hard working, dedicated student athlete. Dedication is the key to success in this sport. It's about consistency day in, day out.
