Zi Burns is a sophomore point guard on The Out-of-Door Academy girls basketball team. She scored 18 points in the Thunder's 59-17 home win against Saint Petersburg Catholic on Nov. 22. Burns moved to Lakewood Ranch from Delaware during the offseason.

When did you start playing basketball?

I started when I was 6, with a local team in Delaware. It was just for fun at first. It was to get more active and work off some of the energy I had when I was little.

What is the appeal to you?

I like how competitive it is, and how that competition can shape the team. It can form bonds and bring us together.

What is your best skill?

Creating opportunities for other players. I have always been one to set up others for shots before myself.

What is your favorite memory?

My former team (Sanford School) won the Delaware state championship last season. Watching our point guard (Lauren Park-Lane) hit the final floater was amazing. It was an incredible experience.

What has been your biggest challenge?

Sometimes I create too much for others, to the point where it affects my own game and I will pass up open shots. Coaches have talked to me about being more aggressive and I have been working on following that advice. I need to create more opportunities for myself.

What are your goals for the season?

I want us to make it to the regional tournament and play more as a team. It is still early in the season. I think it will all come together.

What is your favorite movie?

I love the "Harry Potter" series. If I had to choose one, it would be "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire."

What is your dream vacation?

I would love to go to Hawaii. There is cool surfing out there and I like how tropical it is.

Which superpower would you pick?

Flying. I would fly over New York City at night and spend time on all the tall buildings, looking down at everything.

What is your favorite subject?

Math. There is always a solution to whatever problem is presented, and I like that.

What is the best piece of advice you have received?

Be kind. My mom (Cathy Burns) tells me that a lot. I think it is simple but important.

Finish this sentence: "Zi Burns is …"

… Determined. When I put my mind to something, I am always going to do my best. I am going to get the job done.
