We live in an age of technology that continues to expand daily and infiltrate our lives more and more each day.
Digital dementia - research shows that anytime someone’s phone rings, beeps, vibrates, lights up and we pick it up or look at it we actually lose our attention span from anywhere between 13-17 minutes.
Whether a person is 40 or 80 years old, the fear of losing brain function is debilitating. We now know that process that leads to dementia, many times, will start 25-30 years before the actual diagnosis. There are a few societal beliefs that perpetuate and hide this problem. One is the belief that as we get older, we are supposed to become forgetful, that it is a normal part of aging. This is completely false and it is one of the reasons why so many people fly under the radar for so long in the early stages of dementia.
Signs of cognitive decline are not always clear cut. Often signs are very subtle. Symptoms have a gradual onset (months to years) instead of a sudden onset. Some signs and symptoms of the early symptoms can be in language presentation : difficulty finding words in conversation and other cognitive domains. Visual : deficits in spatial orientation, walking into a room and not recalling why you walked in, impaired facial recognition, not being able to recall names. Executive Dysfunction: difficulty problem solving, remembering appointments.
In many cases it may not be obvious if the patient is suffering from cognitive decline. Traumatic brain injuries, food sensitivities, obstruction of blood flow to the brain and other genetic and environmental variables such as mercury in fish and fillings, mold as well as Lyme exposure can be factors resulting in cognitive impairment. We now know, based on the research that there are things we can do to not only prevent entering that curtain into dementia but in the early stages being able to stop it from progressing.
