Bradenton school namesake dies

The namesake of William H. Bashaw Elementary School has died.

The School District of Manatee County announced former district superintendent, administrator and educator William H. Bashaw died Feb. 9 surrounded by friends and family.

“Dr. Bashaw served one of the longest terms as superintendent in the history of the School District of Manatee County. His contributions were many and profound,” Superintendent Cynthia Saunders said. “Our prayers are with his family and loved ones, and we hope they find comfort that the school that bears his name will be a shining reminder of his legacy.”

Bashaw, a native of Gainesville, worked as an educator and coach before moving to Manatee County in 1962, at which time he was hired as the assistant finance director. He was promoted to assistant superintendent in 1968 and superintendent in 1970. He led the school district until retiring in June 1983.

Bashaw began his tenure during the days of segregation and is noted for restoring calm to the district during that era. He also oversaw a period of rapid growth and major construction projects, including seven new schools and major renovations to several elementary schools,
