Sarasota County Schools announced the names of the students from across the district that were chosen as finalists for the National Merit Scholarship on Feb. 15.
28 students in total, or 14% of Pine View’s senior class, were chosen by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation.
Four students from Riverview High School were also chosen, as well as one student from Sarasota High School.
Since 1955, the program has provided the opportunity for students to compete for academic recognition and scholarships. To qualify, students must take the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT) as well as meet other participation requirements.
According to a statement by Sarasota County Schools, approximately 1.6 million students enter the program every year nationwide and only the 50,000 students with the highest scores qualify for recognition.
“The National Merit Scholarship Corporation reported about 15,000 of the 16,000 Semifinalists named in September 2018 met all requirements to advance to Finalist standing in the competition,” as explained in the statement. “All Finalists will be considered for National Merit Scholarships to be offered later in 2019.”
From Sarasota High School, Kaitlyn King was recognized as a finalist.
