‘Metal, Marble & More’

Learn the wonders of several of the art world’s most interesting mediums in this exhibit, which features sculpture work by four award-winning gallery artists: Candace Knapp, Gert Olsen, George Paxton and James H. Smith. Runs through May 30 and gallery is open 11 a.m.-5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday.

 

Don’t Miss: ‘Uptown Views’

Art Uptown gallery is debuting six new artists at this dynamic exhibit. Enjoy original works by oil painter Peter Christ, nature-inspired contemporary artist Leigh O’Rourke, mixed-media artist Laura Reed, colorful painter Dan Reeves, abstract landscape artist Kathy Wright and realistic acrylic painter Marlane Wurzbach. Runs through May 24.

Rob Shanahan Rock ‘n’ Roll Gallery Exhibition

Rob Shanahan knows rock ‘n’ roll up close and personal. As a musical artist photographer for icons such as Ringo Starr, the Rolling Stones and Paul McCartney, this guy’s got some stories to tell. Enjoy this exhibition of his photos on display until Sept. 30. The gallery is open 11 a.m.-6 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday.

 

‘Wednesday’s Child’

This world premiere play starts off with an issue familiar to many American couples: fertility. Susan and Martin Merrit hire Becca Connor to serve as a surrogate. It’s the perfect solution — until Becca is found dead. An explosive investigation ensues as detectives Valez and Dixon begin uncover secrets that change everything. Runs through May 24.

Nik’s Pick: Honk! A Musical Tale of ‘The Ugly Duckling’

We’re not a fan of naming a duck Ugly, but stick with this story — it has an important message. Ugly looks much different than his brothers and sisters. The animals around him enjoy pointing this out, despite his mother’s protective nature. So Ugly does what any young oddball would — he goes on an adventure to find himself. Join him as he meets a bunch of other outcasts who help him embrace what makes him stand out. Runs through May 19.

The Downtown Sarasota Craft Festival

Sarasota is a hub of modern architecture, and one of the crown jewels is architects Ralph Twitchell and Paul Rudolph of the Sarasota School’s 1950 Healy Guest House, also known as Cocoon House. Tour this masterpiece of the Sarasota School of Architecture on Siesta Key’s Bayou Louise Lane to explore the two bedrooms, one bathroom and the rest of the 760-square-foot cottage built as a guesthouse for Mr. and Mrs. W. R. Healy. Learn how the house got its name and much more on these new Sarasota Architectural Foundations tours.

Keith Crowley relocated to Ruskin’s Lone Pine RV Park in February 2015 after being hired at The Ringling. Much of his art from this period onward has been inspired by this transition and the unusual environment he came to call home. Learn the power of place in this series of oil paintings and watercolors utilizing layering of saturated, thin glazes or washes depicting snapshots of everyday life.

The Queen of Disco is reborn with this dazzling production conceived, written and produced by Katt Hefner (who’s performed everywhere from the Ringling International Arts Festival to Jazz in the Heritage Gardens festival in Moscow) and developed and directed by Westcoast Black Theatre Troupe Founder and Artistic Director Nate Jacobs. Hefner will re-create Donna Summer’s iconic and energetic stage presence through performances of classics such as “I Feel Love,” “Bad Girls,” “Hot Stuff” and more.

‘Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street’

Asolo Repertory Theatre takes on this winner of eight Tony Awards — a dark tale of love, murder and revenge in 19th-century London that continues to entertain audiences four decades after its premiere. Sweeney Todd is out for revenge on the judge who unjustly imprisoned him for 15 years, taking him from his wife and daughter. Todd’s need for vengeance becomes profitable when he teams up with meat pie shop owner Mrs. Lovett and opens a barber practice above her shop. Runs through June 1.

Poetry Night
