SunCoast Blood Centers fast-tracked the opening of its new donor center and administrative headquarters in Lakewood Ranch in order to ensure an adequate supply of blood products for the community during the COVID 19 health crisis.  The donor center is located at 3025 Lakewood Ranch Blvd. suite 111. Appointments are strongly encouraged in order to plan and implement social distancing for donors and staff.

Patients battling cancer, undergoing major surgery or suffering serious trauma still need blood products. SunCoast must be prepared in the likely event it will need to appeal to the community to donate blood and platelets in the coming weeks.  The new donor center houses all SunCoast’s operations under one roof, including the new state-of-the-art donor center which replaces its smaller center in Lakewood Ranch Plaza.  With the opening of the new facility in Manatee County, along with the flagship donor center at 1760 Mound Street in Sarasota it can accommodate more donors safely and securely. It also operates donor centers in Bradenton and Venice.

There is no data that this coronavirus can be transmitted by blood transfusion, and there have been no reported cases of transfusion transmission for any respiratory virus including this coronavirus worldwide. SunCoast wants to assure the public that it is safe to donate blood and it is exceeding the Food and Drug Administration guidelines for safety.
