There are a lot of things that are older than the town. Sports Illustrated, electric drip-brew coffeemakers, Tupperware, Silly Putty and about 60% of the town's own residents.

Still, the town on Sunday celebrated its 66th birthday.

At the time the town was incorporated, about 215 people lived on the island and only about a third of it was developed. Also at the time the town was incorporated, which was also when its changed its name from Longbeach to Longboat Key, the average current resident was entering kindergarten.

Today, nearly 7,000 people call Longboat home on a permanent basis. And their average age is 71.
