The weather outside isn't frightful. But this show is so delightful. The Dingbat Theatre Project brings you the tale of Jack Frost borrowing elements from Russian, Slavic and Northern European folklore. This play is written by Luke Manual McFatrich and Emma Denson and inspired by "The Runaway Shadows" by L. Frank Baum.

Listen to the sultry jazz sounds of singer Ona Kirei and take in the sights of the Sarasota Art Museum in one fell swoop. The museum's galleries will be open to 7 p.m., and Bistro will be serving a dinner menu complete with beer, wine and cocktails. Kirei, born in Barcelona, released her debut album "Mirage" earlier this year.

The USRowing Masters National Championships will be held at Nathan Benderson Park, featuring races in more than 200 masters categories. A master is a competitor who has attained or will attain the age of 21 during the current calendar year. Runs through Sunday.
Friday Fest: Big Night Out

Sarasota just isn't the same when the Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall is out of season. But Friday Fest was built to combat that very phenomenon. For four Fridays during the summer, the lawn at Van Wezel is transformed into a raucous outdoor party with the best bands in town. Big Night Out will take the stage on Friday evening, and Jah Movement will play the final Friday Fest in September. And after that, the venue will return to its normal action-packed scheduling.

What do you know about Japan's Jazz Age? Not much? Then you're a perfect candidate for this exhibit, which features six evocative paintings by Japanese artist Enomoto Chikatoshi. These paintings depict taxi dancers at Ballroom Florida, which for a brief moment in time was a Jazz hot spot in pre-WW2 Tokyo. The era evaporated as war began, but the moment in time is eternally preserved by Chikatoshi's tasteful brushwork.

The Venice Theatre presents "The Teenyboppers," a group of teen artists who have been working all summer to sharpen their comedic instincts and repartee. The Sarasota Art Museum opens its doors to the public for no charge every second Sunday, which means you can visit exhibits like Katrina Coombs "I M(O)THER," which examines femininity, sexuality and spirituality in the modern world.

Author Dr. Jackie Ogega, a Kenyan-American survivor of gender-based violence, will talk about her mother's upbringing in Kenya and her fight to ensure a safe and equitable world for herself and her three daughters. The author's mother, Marcella, will be on hand, and Ogega will take questions about her memoir.
Monday Night Jazz: Valerie Gillespie Ensemble

Valerie Gillespie, who both sings and plays saxophone, will be backed by a talented group including bassist Steve Boisen, drummer Jean Balduc and keyboardist Jody Marsh at the Jazz Club's Monday Night Jazz Cabaret. Gillespie is based in the Tampa area, and her website says she is dedicated to preservation of live jazz.
Jazz Happy Hour: Akeim Esdaile

The librarian is not going to shush you. You're free to move and dance and vibe to the smooth guitar sounds of Akeim Esdaile, who specializes in modern jazz and improvisation. Selby Library will be the scene, and for an hour, it will be transformed from a sedate housing of knowledge into a swanky jazz cabaret. This event is the third and final edition of the Sarasota Music Archive's summer Jazz Happy Hour at Selby Library.
