The children were at risk, the family was in chaos and dancing was their catalyst toward healing.
Fourteen-year-old Jennifer struggled academically and socially. Her mother battled with substance misuse, her sister was an angry teen and her father was failing to unite the family. Jennifer found comfort in listening to music, but it also isolated her from others. A caring teacher who participated with JFCS at a local school recommended Camp Mariposa to Jennifer. Camp Mariposa is a year-round program for children ages 9-17 affected by a family member's substance use disease.
Silent Disco headphones purchased this year through the National Council of Jewish Women offered JFCS campers a unique and therapeutic experience by providing them the freedom to immerse themselves in music, though connecting with others around them. These headphones allowed Jennifer to find refuge in her music, alleviate anxiety and tension, and provide her a space to dance and sing with her peers. Each camper hears the music they enjoy while dancing with others, establishing connections and building camaraderie. Jennifer motivated her sister to also attend Camp Mariposa and share in the dance toward healing. Weekend camps mix typical camp activities with sessions of education and support led by mental health specialists and qualified adult mentors.
But Jennifer’s story doesn’t end there. Jennifer's mother accepted substance addiction treatment after speaking with a JFCS case manager through their REACH (Restoring Empowerment & Choosing Hope) program. Through collaboration with another organization, her mother was able to obtain specialized treatment. Jennifer's father also enrolled in the Ignite Fatherhood program to learn how to improve family dynamics and financial stability. In addition, the entire family received counseling through JFCS’s Mental Health & Counseling program.
That is what distinguishes JFCS. Their wrap-around approach to care takes into account the needs and strengths of each individual and family. Wraparound case managers and social workers develop tailored care plans that address dynamics such as anxiety, depression and trauma response. The road ahead for the families JFCS serves is not without challenges, but the organization’s track record creates a path of hope and success.
