Cardinal Mooney High senior Jordyn Byrd was named the 2022-2023 Gatorade Florida Volleyball Player of the Year on Friday.

The 6-foot-5 Byrd, who also won the award in 2021-2022, had 571 kills, 206 digs, 52 service aces and 48 blocks while posting a .571 kill percentage and a .439 hitting percentage this past season.

The award based on high standards of academic achievement and exemplary character demonstrated on and off the court. According to a Gatorade press release, Byrd has a 3.69 GPA , serves as a Cardinal Mooney Catholic High School student ambassador and has volunteered at "Stuff the Bus" events, which collect school supplies and toiletries for underserved children.

Calvary Christian High coach Kim Whitney had high praise for Byrd's abilities.

“Jordyn is better than any hitter I’ve seen in the state,” Whitney said in the release. “She attacks the ball at a very high point, which is very difficult to defend. She’s able to put a ball away wherever she is on the court."

Byrd is ranked by PrepDig.com as the No.16 player in the national Class of 2023. She has signed to play at the University of Texas.
