Fatal overnight crash on Tamiami remains under investigation

The Sarasota Police Department Traffic Unit is investigating a fatal crash that occurred at approximately 2:45 a.m. Thursday, June 1. Officers responded to a two-vehicle crash on South Tamiami Trail near Rose Street.

The driver of an SUV, a 66-year-old woman, died at the scene. She was traveling northbound in the southbound lanes before crashing into a box truck. The driver of the truck, a 48-year-old man, was taken to Sarasota Memorial Hospital, where he remains hospitalized. 

South Tamiami Trail from the intersection of Bougainvillea Street to Goldenrod Street was closed for several hours during the investigation. It’s unknown if drugs, alcohol or speeding played a factor in the crash, which remains under investigation.
