Sarasota County 4-H member Camile Gehan, age 13, wasn’t at the Sarasota County Fair for the rides and roller coasters. She stood in the Houser Show Arena, grooming her cow Sunshine for the beef-breeding show taking place the following day.
“It’s fun. I like getting to groom her and getting her ready for the show,” said Gehan, who is involved in the show for the first time.
The skills on display at youth agricultural shows made up a part of the festive scene at the Sarasota County Fair on Wednesday.
Held at the Robarts Arena through Sunday, the fair features rides and attractions provided by Belle City Amusements, food stands from numerous independent vendors, face painting and magic shows, among other offerings.
Ricky Rowles said he has been coming every year to the fair for about four years.
“It’s a great atmosphere. Just a good time to get out,” he said.
Gehan’s mother, Heather Gehan, said the fair was an excellent opportunity for young people to showcase their abilities.
“It’s so good for the kids,” she said. “They just love it.”
Before the show begins, Camile Gehan has to groom Sunshine often to help straighten her wavy top hairline, give her a bath and use a machine to blow-dry her.
“I especially love the agriculture," said Lydia Roberts. "I grew up showing, so I love coming back and seeing it.”
Roberts said overall, she was having a blast.
Carlos Hernandez, a fair worker from Alabama, said he always looks forward to returning to Sarasota each year with Belle City Amusements, because the people here are part of the experience.
“We came to the greatest fair ever. We love Sarasota. I love the people. We’re not doing it for the money, we’re doing it for fun. I like to see people happy, and bring them good food.”
