Hurricane season is less than a month away from its official start date of June 1.

In preparation, Florida Power and Light released its 2023 residential storm tips to keep both your home and family safe through the storm season.

“The destruction caused by Hurricane Ian less than a year ago shows the importance of proactively planning for the upcoming hurricane season,” the news release said. “FPL urges Floridians to be prepared and to be aware of potential safety hazards at all times — before, during and after severe weather.”

Tips to keep in mind before a storm:
  • Check whether your home or business is in a flood zone and which evacuation zone you are in.
  • Photograph your home or business inside and out for insurance purposes.
  • Determine a backup power source or make arrangements to relocate if a storm warning is issued and someone in your household is dependent on electric-powered, life-sustaining medical equipment.
  • Do not attempt to trim any vegetation growing on or near overhead power lines. Only hire qualified professionals to trim trees and other vegetation near power lines.

Tips for when a storm is actively approaching:
  • Turn off and unplug any unnecessary electrical equipment.
  • Set your fridge and freezer to the coldest setting ahead of time to keep food fresh for longer should the power go out.
  • Store important documents such as birth certificates and social security cards in a waterproof container.
  • Keep a battery-operated radio with you and a two-week supply of batteries.
  • Check your emergency equipment such as flashlights, battery-operated radios, extension cords and emergency generators.
  • Purchase bottled water. It is recommended to keep one gallon of water per person per day for up to 14 days.
  • Secure and prepare your home by storing outside objects inside, fasten doors and windows, cover valuables and furniture with plastic and move away from windows.
