Eileen Gildea
1933-2023
Eileen Gildea of Longboat Key, Florida and Hampton Bays, New York passed away peacefully at home on October 24, 2023, surrounded by her family. She was born February 6, 1933, to James and Mary (Sheridan) Gilden.
She was preceded in death by her parents, James and Mary Gildea; an aunt, Irene Sheridan; brothers, James, John (Buddy); sister, Nancy Winning; sisters-in-law, Christine and Catherine Gildea and life partner, Harold Charno. She is survived by her brother, Joseph; nephews, Michael, Patrick, Joseph (CS), Sean and John Gildea and Billy Winning; nieces, Christine and Jennifer Gildea and Dawn Winning; four grand nephews and nine grand-nieces in addition to 15 beloved first cousins and many treasured friends and neighbors.
Eileen was born and raised in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, New York and later settled in Middle Village, Queens before retiring to Hampton Bays, and Longboat Key. She graduated from St. Michael’s Academy. Later, she had a successful career on Wall Street working at First Manhattan Company, where she retired in 1985. She was an avid reader and golfer, enjoyed kayaking, swimming and walked every day for exercise all well into her mid-eighties. She was extremely generous to her extended family and hosted many reunions over the years.
She was also a parishioner at St Mary’s Star of the Sea Church on Longboat Key.
Eileen was an active member of the Longboat Harbour community, attending socials with her dear friend, Joseph Callahan. She was known for her smile, sense of humor and “strut” as she took part in the LBH fashion shows, yacht parades and parties throughout the years. She was also a parishioner at St Mary’s Star of the Sea Church on Longboat Key.
The family extends great appreciation for the loving home care that was afforded to her by Doris Alberto, Loretta Cook and Jennifer Foster of Visiting Angels and to Tidewell Hospice.
A Funeral Mass will be held 11 AM, Thursday, November 16, 2023, at St. Mary’s Star of the Sea Church on Longboat Key. Brown & Sons Funeral Homes & Crematory 43rd Street Chapel, is in charge of arrangements. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Eileen’s name to Tidewell Hospice, 5955 Rand Blvd., Sarasota, FL 34238.
