The Longboat Key Democratic Club hosted its first meeting of the year on Nov. 7 at the Sarasota Yacht Club.
President Lucy Lapovsky kicked off the meeting by welcoming back everyone and filling them in on the variety of programs the club has this year.
Andrew Warren was the speaker for this luncheon. His talk was titled “The Crisis of Voter Suppression and What We Can Do About It.” He has spoken for the club multiple times before.
Warren was elected the state attorney for Florida’s 13th Judicial Circuit, Hillsborough County in 2017. In August 2022, Gov. Ron DeSantis suspended Warren. He talked about this experience and answered questions about it. Warren was previously a federal prosecutor in the fraud division at the U.S. Department of Justice.
Liz Parker, who is running for the District 2 seat on the Sarasota County School Board, attended the lunch as well. She is the local mother of four children and a former school psychologist. She spoke about the upcoming election and got to know more Longboat Key residents.
Lapovsky said that everyone was eager to get back involved with the LBK Dems community. They are excited to hear from the many speakers like Warren and start working on their goals for the year.
