High school football roundup: FHSAA regional finals

Two Sarasota-area teams advanced to the state semifinals Friday night, while one saw its season end.

Cardinal Mooney High (10-2) won 42-0 over Victory Christian Academy (6-6) in Class 1S. Cougars senior running back Carson Beach ran for touchdowns of 74 yards, 25 yards and one yard. Senior quarterback Michael Valentino threw a 31-yard touchdown pass to junior Chris McCorkle. Senior Teddy Foster returned a punt 45 yards for a touchdown. Freshman Caleb Moreland ran for a five-yard touchdown. Nino Schuetz kicked a 37-yard field goal. The Cougars will next play North Florida Christian (9-3) at 7:30 p.m. Dec. 1 at home in the state semifinals. 

Booker High (9-4) won 38-32 over Bishop Verot High (11-2) in Class 2S. Tornadoes sophomore Kevontay Hugan ran for two touchdowns and returned an interception 50 yards for a touchdown. Senior Josiah Booker ran for a 25-yard touchdown. Senior kicker Oswaldo Mendoza-Munoz made field goals of 25 yards, 35 yards and 40 yards. Booker forced Bishop Verot into seven turnovers. The Tornadoes will next play Cocoa High (12-1)at 7:30 p.m. Dec. 1 on the road in the state semifinals. 

Riverview High (8-5) lost 49-23 to Venice High (11-2) on the road in Class 4S. Rams senior quarterback Braxton Thomas ran for a two-yard touchdown and threw a 67-yard touchdown pass to senior receiver Anthony Campbell. Junior running back DJ Johnson ran for a 14-yard touchdown.
