High school football roundup: Week five

Four area schools walked away with big wins Sept. 22.

Sarasota

Booker High (3-2) won 24-20 over Braden River High (2-2) at home. Junior quarterback Jordan Johnson completed three of four passes for 54 yards and two touchdowns, both to senior receiver Joshua Burrows. Junior quarterback Alex Diaz threw a 30-yard touchdown to senior Josiah Booker. Senior kicker Oswaldo Mendoza-Munoz made a 34-yard field goal. The Tornadoes will next host Bayshore High (3-1) at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 29. 

Cardinal Mooney High (4-1) won 60-0 over Space Coast High (0-5) on the road. Sophomore quarterback Devin Mignery threw touchdowns to senior Zy'marion Lang, senior Teddy Foster and sophomore Mason Jordan and added a rushing touchdown. Foster also had a pick six on defense. Senior running back Carson Beach ran for two touchdowns. The Cougars will next host Sarasota High (0-5) at 7 p.m. Sept. 29. 

Sarasota High (0-5) lost 42-14 to Bishop Verot High (5-0) at home. Senior quarterback Johnny Squitieri hit sophomore tight end Scott Wells for a touchdown in the second quarter. The Sailors will next play Cardinal Mooney High (4-1) on the road at 7 p.m. Sept. 29.

Riverview High (3-1) had an off week. The Rams will next play Venice High (2-2) on the road at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 29. 


East County 

Braden River High (2-2) lost 24-20 to Booker High (3-2) on the road. Junior quarterback Lucas Despot completed 13 of 33 passes for 193 yards and two touchdowns, one an 83-yard touchdown to senior receiver Isaac Heaven and one a four-yard throw to junior receiver/running back Yahshua Edwards. Junior kicker Brunno Reus made field goals of 45 and 34 yards. The Pirates will hit the road to play Port Charlotte High (3-2) at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 29. 

Lakewood Ranch High (2-3) won 22-12 over Lyman High (3-2) at home. Senior quarterback Sebastian Mejia threw a touchdown to senior Tyler Lakin and ran for a touchdown. Senior running back Simon Freed added a goal-line touchdown run. The Mustangs will next host Manatee High (5-0) at 7 p.m. Sept. 29. 

The Out-of-Door Academy (2-2) won 40-22 over Faith Christian Academy (2-3) on the road. Sophomore running back Allen Clark had two rushing touchdowns and a two-point conversion. Senior receiver/running back Jack Meyers had three touchdowns. Senior linebacker Jack Taraska had an interception. The Thunder will next host Santa Fe Catholic (1-2) at 7 p.m. Sept. 29. 

Parrish Community High (3-1) had an off week. The Bulls will next host Southeast High (0-4) at 7 p.m. Sept. 29.
