High school football roundup: Week six

It was a week of blowouts: Only one area team, ODA, played a game decided by one possession.

East County 

The Out-of-Door Academy (3-2) won 33-26 over Santa Fe Catholic (1-3) at home. Sophomore running back Allen Clark accounted for three rushing touchdowns while senior Jack Meyers added one. Meyers also caught a touchdown from junior quarterback Jackson Roth. On defense, junior cornerback Frankie Clark had a fumble return for a touchdown on the game's first play from scrimmage. ODA will next play Bell Creek Academy (1-3) at 7 p.m. Oct. 6 at home. 

Braden River High (2-3) lost 49-16 to Port Charlotte High (4-2) on the road. Junior quarterback Lucas Despot threw two touchdowns to senior tight end Cody Kawcak. Braden River had two fumbles and an interception and Port Charlotte returned one of each for a touchdown. The Pirates have an off week next week and will return to action at 7 p.m. Oct. 13 against Parrish Community High (4-1) on the road. 

Lakewood Ranch High (2-4) lost 52-6 to Manatee High (6-0) at home. Senior cornerback Jayden Munoz had two first-quarter interceptions. Six Manatee players scored touchdowns. The Mustangs have an off week next week and will return to action at 7 p.m. Oct. 13 against Palmetto High (2-2) at home. 

Parrish Community High (4-1) won 23-2 against Southeast High (0-5). The Bulls will next play Mulberry High (3-1) at 7 p.m. Oct 6 on the road. 


Sarasota 

Booker High (4-2) won 50-6 against Bayshore High (3-2) at home. Sophomore Kevontay Hugan, a defensive end, was used in short-yardage running situations and had two touchdowns. Sophomore safety Jason Thomas had a pick six and senior safety Noah Obaseki had a scoop-and-score fumble recovery. The Tornadoes next have an off week. They will return to action against DeSoto County High (0-5) at 7 p.m. Oct. 13 at home. 

Cardinal Mooney High (5-1) won 31-21 over Sarasota High (0-6). Cardinal Mooney quarterback Devin Mignery threw a touchdown pass to receiver Chris McCorkle. Sarasota quarterback Johnny Squitieri threw a touchdown to Jackson Mullett. The Cougars will have an off week before returning to action at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 13 against John Carroll Catholic (1-5) at home. The Sailors will have an off week before returning to action at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 13 against Venice High (3-2) on the road. 

Riverview High (3-2) lost 35-14 to Venice High (3-2) on the road. Rams running backs DJ Johnson and Isaiah Belt each had a touchdown. Riverview will next play Berkeley Prep (3-2) at 7 p.m. Oct. 6 on the road.
