High school football roundup: Aug. 23

The 2024 FHSAA season gets underway while two area SSAA teams roll.

Lakewood Ranch High (1-0) won 42-18 against Lemon Bay High (0-1) at home. Senior running back Cullen McRae had three touchdown runs while junior quarterback Liam Fernandez had two touchdown runs. Junior running back Colton Dempsey also added a touchdown run. The Mustangs will next hit the road to play Seminole High (0-1) at 7:30 p.m. Aug. 30.

The Out-of-Door Academy (2-0) won 28-0 over Faith Christian Academy (0-2) at home. Junior running back Allen Clark had 21 carries for 143 yards and three touchdowns. Senior quarterback Josey Rubinstein threw a 13-yard touchdown pass to Carson Fisher. The ODA defense intercepted three FCA passes and completed its second-consecutive shutout. The Thunder will next hit the road to play Central Florida Christian Academy (0-0) at 7:30 p.m. Aug. 30. 

Parrish Community High (1-0) won 24-3 against North Port High (0-1) on the road. Senior Michael Bell returned an interception for a touchdown. Junior running back Keyon Maxwell and senior athlete Jermaine Edwards each had a rushing touchdown. The Bulls will next hit the road to play Bayshore High (0-1) at 7:30 p.m. Aug. 30.

Braden River High (0-1) lost 38-7 to Gainesville High (1-0) on the road. Senior quarterback Lucas Despot had a five-yard touchdown run. The Pirates will next host Sarasota High (0-1) at 7:30 p.m. Aug. 30. 


Sarasota 

Cardinal Mooney High (1-0) won 41-6 against Sarasota High (0-1) on the road. Cardinal Mooney led 41-0 at halftime. Cougars junior quarterback Devin Mignery threw three touchdown passes and ran for another. Freshman quarterback Hudson West ran for the lone Sailors score. The Cougars will next host the Community School of Naples (0-1) at 7 p.m. Aug. 30, while the Sailors will hit the road to play Braden River High (0-1) at 7:30 p.m. Aug. 30. 

Booker High (1-0) won 46-0 over Lely High (0-1) at home. Junior quarterback Joel Morris and senior quarterback Ryan Downes had three touchdown passes each. The Tornadoes will next hit the road to play Berkeley Prep (1-0) at 7:30 p.m. Aug. 30. 

Sarasota Christian School (1-1) won 33-7 over Bishop McLaughlin Catholic (0-1) at home. Junior quarterback Ben Milliken threw four touchdown passes, two to junior Justin Brock and two to sophomore Noah Spenn. The Blazers will next hit the road to play Bell Creek Academy (0-1) at 7 p.m. Aug. 30. 

Riverview High (0-1) lost 47-14 to Naples High (1-0) at home. The Rams will next host Hillsborough Riverview High (0-1) at 7:30 p.m. Aug. 30.
