Two killed in head-on crash on State Road 70

A driver was attempting to pass slower traffic, troopers say.

Two people were killed in a head-on collision Dec. 14 on State Road 70 in Arcadia, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

Investigators say an SUV was heading west on State Road 70 near Betts Road at about 8 p.m. when the driver switched into the oncoming lane to pass other traffic.

A pickup truck was in the oncoming lane; the vehicles hit head-on, troopers said. 

A passenger in the front seat of the SUV, a 56-year-old man from Bradenton, and the driver of the pickup truck, a 47-year-old man from Arcadia, were killed. The driver of the SUV was seriously injured and was hospitalized. 

Two other passengers in the SUV sustained minor injuries, investigators said.
