Photo by Nancy GuthIf best-selling author Colson Whitehead ever chooses to give up his job as a best-selling novelist, he could always start a career as a stand-up comedian.
Although Whitehead tackles tough topics in his books, his speech at the Library Foundation for Sarasota County's annual Love Our Libraries luncheon Feb. 9 was full of humor as he poked fun at himself and his journey of becoming a novelist.
More than 600 people packed the Sarasota Municipal Auditorium for the luncheon. Executive Director Alisa Mitchell discussed how everyone has a "library story" — and how these stories often start when people are children. Mitchell emphasized the important impact libraries have on kids and lifelong learning.
Proceeds from the event will go to celebrate the foundation, which educates, advocates and supports Sarasota County's public libraries.
