The Debutante Program of Sarasota and Manatee counties held its 42nd Debutante Ball on Jan. 6 at the Circus Arts Conservatory's Sailor Circus Arena. The venue was turned into an enchanted magical gala boasting over 350 guests in support of 19 debutantes and their 38 escorts.
These young women are part of a program that honors accomplishments and achievements, and since 1982, 635 debs have been presented to society.
With a motto of "youth serving youth," the program has a further purpose, which is to raise funds for the youth programs of the Sarasota Orchestra. To date, more than $1.5 million has been donated for the purchase of equipment, education and scholarships.
Thirteen Women of Note, or post debutantes, attended the gala and were introduced to the guests just prior to the processional. The traditional Grand Waltz was a hit as the girls danced with their fathers, many who had tears in their eyes. Music was provided by the Gene Cannon and Topspin.
Debutante President Teri Sayer said she is proud of her enthusiastic executive board and the ball committee, which was chaired by Mary Dakkak. After years of holding this event in the Sarasota Municipal Auditorium, the move to CAC was welcome for the second time, and plans are for the annual debutante ball to say at this location.
