The town of Longboat Key has issued an alert to residents to prepare for a low-pressure storm system moving across the area. The storm's impacts are expected to be felt beginning Monday, Jan. 8 through Wednesday, Jan. 10.

Forecasters are predicting:

  • Dangerous marine conditions beginning Monday, including strong rip currents, high surf and beach erosion, through Wednesday.
  • Coastal flooding potential of 2-3 feet Tuesday afternoon into early Wednesday.
  • Gale force wind from 25-35 mph sustained and gusts of 50-60 mph.
  • Thunderstorms producing rain and damaging winds and isolated tornadoes Tuesday afternoon and evening.
  • Rainfall up to 1.5 inches with locally higher amounts causing flooding in low-lying areas.

The town urges residents to take steps to protect themselves and their property. The town requests that residents "bring in, or secure outdoor items, including boats."

It's suggested that those living in low-lying flood-prone areas move vehicles to higher property.

Sand bags (10 per residence) are available at Public Works, 600 General Harris St. Bring proof of residency.
