Madi Mignery is a freshman on the Cardinal Mooney High girls basketball team. Mignery had 12 points and 14 rebounds in the Cougars' 48-41 road win over Booker High on Jan. 15. For the season, Mignery is averaging 10.2 points and 9.9 rebounds per game.

How did you get into basketball?

I grew up in Ann Arbor, Michigan, which is a big basketball town. I was around it from a young age. I fell in love with watching it and eventually started playing it myself. (Mignery moved to Sarasota three years ago.)

What is the appeal of basketball?

I love the competitiveness of the game. I love going at it with other players and showing my talents on the court while getting to guard some of the other team's best players as well.

What is your best skill?

I lead the team in rebounds this year. That has always been a skill of mine, but this year I have demanded excellence in it because I know how much it helps the team. My mid-range scoring has also been good.

What have you been working to improve?

My long-range shot. I have struggled with that a bit this year. I have been putting in a lot of time to try to get better. I have seen some improvement already, but I still want to see more improvement.

What is your favorite basketball memory?

Last summer I got to play in Europe at the United World Games and my team won the gold medal. I got to play against some great teams and I met girls from across the United States as well. The games were in Austria and we got to travel to Italy and Germany. It was a great experience.

What has your experience with Cardinal Mooney High been like?

I absolutely love it. The girls welcomed me and I have become close with a lot of my teammates. The coaching staff pushes me to be the best version of myself. We're trying to work on consistency. Our goal is to win a state championship and we are super excited for the postseason coming up.

What is your favorite food?

I would have to go with sushi.

What is your favorite TV show?

I do love "Outer Banks." My family watches "The Lincoln Lawyer," too. Both of those shows I like a lot.

What is your favorite subject?

I like math. I have always been pretty good in those classes.

Which superpower would you pick?

I have always wanted to be able to fly. That would just be so cool.

What is the best advice you have received?

Keep your head down and work. It will end up paying off if you work day in and day out. Good things will happen.

Finish this sentence: "Madi Mignery is … "
