The Sarasota County School Board began its first discussion of 2024 with a work session that brought its focus to an organizational excellence overview, a framework for school performance and a literacy plan.

The organizational excellence overview would bring the district's vision from top staff members, to front-line workers, such as food service workers, in the Business and Operations Division of the district, said Jody Dumas, assistant superintendent of operations.

The board also discussed a Focus Framework for Advancing School Performance designed to advance accountability, professional development and other components. It targets the areas of growing core instruction and aligning tiered supports for students, with some of its stages including impact reviews, meetings and monitoring and supporting.

A literacy plan, titled "Literacy for All," would accelerate the progress of as many at-risk students as possible. The plan would focus on language comprehension, as well as word recognition, through means including high-quality instruction, advanced progress monitoring and coaching and intervention support.
