One dead after Friday shooting at Beneva shopping center

A midday Friday shooting that occurred at a north Sarasota shopping center has become a death investigation, according to the Sarasota Police Department.

The incident occurred at about 11:30 a.m. Jan. 19 at Sarasota Commons at 935 N. Beneva Road. 

An unidentified victim was transported to Sarasota Memorial Hospital for treatment. The victim was pronounced dead later on Friday. 

Investigators said it is unclear if this was a targeted shooting or a random incident, and it is unclear how many people were involved. 

The SPD is seeking public assistance from anyone who was at the scene and witnessed the shooting. Anyone with information is asked to contact Det. Llovio at 941-809-3009.
