The Selby Library in downtown Sarasota was an active crime scene for more than two hours Thursday evening because of a bomb threat.

Shortly before 8 p.m. Todd Williams, 57, entered the library at 1331 First St. and allegedly said he had explosive materials in his backpack and threatened to harm others. The Sarasota Police Department’s Explosive Materials Unit responded to investigate the backpack and determined it was free of any explosive devices.

The building was evacuated, and officers took Williams into custody. The scene was cleared after 10 p.m. No one was injured during the incident.

Williams, of Sarasota, was charged with making a false bomb threat and booked at Sarasota County Jail.
