Sarasota swimmer Emma Weyant followed her silver medal in the 400-meter individual medley at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics with a bronze medal at the 2024 Paris Olympics.

Weyant finished third in the 400 IM on July 29, touching the final wall in 4:34.93. Weyant trailed Britain's Freya Constance Colbert for third place by approximately two seconds at the halfway point of the race before storming back.

Weyant finished behind second-place Katie Grimes of the U.S. (4:33.40) and a first-place Canadian swimmer — one that has connections to Sarasota of her own.

Summer McIntosh was born in Toronto, Ontario, but has spent time training at Selby Aquatic Center with the Sarasota Sharks. The Sharks head coach, Brent Arckey, also joined Team Canada for the Olympics to help mentor McIntosh. The 17-year-old phenom finished the 400 IM in 4:27.71. She previously finished second in the 400-meter freestyle (3:58.37) on July 27.

Weyant's Olympics are now complete. McIntosh will swim the 200-meter butterfly at 2:30 p.m. Aug. 1 and the 200-meter IM at 3 p.m. Aug. 3.

Swimmers were not the only Sarasota-affiliated athletes to earn medals on July 29. Brody Malone, a men's gymnast who moved to Sarasota to train with EVO Gymnastics prior to the Olympics, and fellow EVO trainee Stephen Nedoroscik helped the U.S. take bronze (257.793) in the men's artistic team all-around competition July 29. It is the first Olympic team medal in the discipline for the U.S. since 2008. The team finished behind winner Japan (259.594) and second-place China (259.062).

Malone, who suffered a serious knee injury in 2023, competed in the pommel horse, rings, vault, parallel bars and horizontal bar for the team. Nedoroscik competed solely in the pommel horse, but his performance in the event helped the U.S. clinch medal position.

Not all Sarasota competitors reached the podium. On July 27, shooter Mary Tucker finished 13th in the mixed team air rifle event with teammate Rylan Kissell, and finished 32nd in the Women's 10-meter air rifle, missing the final cut of both events. Tucker will next compete in the Women's 50-meter Rifle 3 positions, with the qualifying round at 6 a.m. Aug. 1.
