Man dies while in custody at Sarasota County Jail

A Sarasota man has died while in custody at the Sarasota County Jail. 

The Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office has reported it is conducting an investigation into the death of Kevin Mandujano Garcia, 34, who at 6:24 a.m. on Saturday, June 29, was found non-responsive and not breathing in a recovery pod of the facility’s medical wing. 

According to a news release, corrections deputies notified medical staff and lifesaving measures were attempted; however he was pronounced deceased a short time later. No notable signs of trauma or injuries were noted and SCSO is awaiting the results of the autopsy from the Medical Examiner’s office.

Garcia was arrested on June 27 by the Sarasota Police Department on charges of burglary of an unoccupied dwelling and larceny. He was being held on a bond of $11,500.

This incident remains an open investigation with SCSO’s Criminal Investigations Section.
