At the Southeastern Conference's spring meetings in Destin, Florida, on May 28, Auburn University football Head Coach Hugh Freeze offered a brief update on the status of Brian Battie, the former Sarasota High star who, along with his brother Tommie Battie and three others, was shot by Darryl Brookins on May 18 outside of Hookah Lounge Marrakech.
"He's getting better," Freeze said during a media session. "To honor the family, I don't want to go into too many things, but they appreciate all the prayers, for sure. It has been a difficult time for the whole family, but (Battie) seems to be getting better each day."
Freeze then confirmed that Battie remains in the hospital.
According to public court documents filed May 24, Battie was in critical condition and was given "the prognosis of permanent paralysis if he survives."
Tommie Battie was pronounced dead at the scene. The three other victims were taken to local hospitals.
Brookins was arrested May 22 and charged with homicide, attempted murder, and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
According to the May 24 public court documents, Brookins is being held in Sarasota County Jail.
