The city of Sarasota gave away 100 trees in about an hour Friday morning and have 50 more to give away Saturday morning at The Bay Park.

Originally intended as a 100-tree giveaway, the quick response by residents on Friday prompted the city to expand the Earth Day celebration. Beginning at 11 a.m. Saturday, the first-come, first-served event will last as long as the tree supply does.

Eight species will be part of Saturday’s event.

  • Spanish stopper
  • Jamaican caper
  • Brackens magnolia
  • orange geiger
  • mango
  • avocado
  • clusia
  • green buttonwood

To claim a free tree, you must be a city of Sarasota resident with proof of residency inside the city limits (in many cases, a Sarasota mailing address can be outside of the boundaries).
