A united effort is needed

There's a short time left to raise the necessary funds for Longboat Key's new civic space and library.

As we work our way back from the recent storms (meteorological and financial), many of us on Longboat Key are looking forward to simpler times ahead. But before we enter the offseason, there is one more project calling us all to action: a new civic space where we can come together and make great things happen.

The island’s first community hall will crown Longboat's newest park, the Town Center Green. Its airy indoor space is designed to flex according to users’ needs, seating up to 200 people for free education, celebrations, entertainment and emergency support. The hall overlooks the park, opening onto an expansive terrace that creates more possibilities by connecting the structure with its garden-like surroundings.

This collaborative project marks a first for Longboat Key: a shared place for all, with construction funded entirely by private donations. Cost efficiencies also benefit the town, as the hall and terrace will be built in connection with Sarasota County’s new $11 million island library. Once the twin-purpose building opens its doors in 2027, Sarasota County has budgeted $1 million annually to cover the entire scope of operations.

We realize the financial strain last year’s hurricanes put on so many — ourselves included. Still, we appreciate the timely nature of this project and are inspired to join the effort, especially as we continue to witness the power of generosity in action.

As we write this, the campaign has confirmed 80% of the $3.5 million in private donations needed. With three weeks until the county’s deadline, the time has come for a united effort. This is a shout-out to all supporters: please spread the good word among your friends and neighbors and, most importantly, join the giving to help build this great new venue on Longboat Key.

With appreciation,

—Paul and Sarah Karon, Longboat Key
