A cold weather shelter will open Thursday night in Sarasota for people in need as frigid air continues to blanket the area, Sarasota County Emergency Management officials said.

The Salvation Army, at 1400 10th St., will be open Thursday, Jan. 23, and Friday, Jan. 24, from 5 p.m. until 6 a.m. A meal will be provided.

A shelter in North Port has been open since Tuesday night. Those staying at a shelter should bring their own sleeping materials, the county said.

A cold weather advisory from the National Weather Service is in effect from 10 p.m. Thursday to 10 a.m. Friday.

Thursday night’s forecast is for partly cloudy skies with a low around 43. North winds 10 to 14 mph, with gusts as high as 18 mph are expected, with wind chills as low as 30 degrees.

Friday will be sunny, with morning wind chills as low as 37 degrees. Friday night lows are expected to be around 39, with north-northeast winds around 14 mph, with gusts as high as 20 mph.

The weather service recommends using caution while traveling outside. Wear appropriate clothing, a hat, and gloves. Keep pets indoors as much as possible.

Make frequent checks on older family, friends, and neighbors. Ensure portable heaters are used correctly. Do not use generators or grills inside.
