July 31 "Dancing fool" 7:12 p.m. -- Off the Key. Disturbance. Police told several people to stop jumping off the south end of Longboat Pass Bridge. They were also told to turn their radio down and that it was illegal to drink beer on the island. As police started to walk away, one young man wearing a thong and holding a beer came out from under the bridge and started to gyrate his hips, telling police to come and get him. Police called for the police boat and the man was arrested after he started to incite the crowd by his drunken behavior. The man, who threatened to have his father get the officer who arrested him fired, later apologized for his actions, blaming the incident on too much Schnapps and vodka.

July 21 "Portable picnic" 9:11 a.m. - 500 block of Bay Isles Road. Larceny. A Longboat Key Public Tennis Center employee noticed that a redwood picnic bench was swiped from the picnic area of the tennis center.

July 15 Mysterious message 7:24 a.m. - 4800 block of GMD. Suspicious Circumstance. A man told police that he believed someone entered his condominium, while he was sleeping in his recliner with the television on, and left a scrolling message on his laptop that read, 'Ah, love the beach, you should turn off your TV. It wastes so much electricity.' An open screen door and smudges on a sliding-glass door were also noted.

July 6 "Wallet whereabouts" 1:57 p.m. -- Lost Property. A man reported losing his wallet on the beach. The wallet contained $50, a driver's license and several credit cards.

July 3 "Sound Swimming" 12:54 a.m. -- Noise Disturbance. Police responded to a home after receiving a complaint of loud kids playing in the pool. The swimmers were asked to take the party inside, and they agreed to do so.

June 21 "Snake Charmer" 5:24 p.m. - Animal Rescue. Police noticed an unsteady bicyclist swerving into Gulf of Mexico Drive. Police discovered he was holding a snake in his hand while riding. Police stopped the bicyclist, took the 3-foot dead rat snake from him and promised to give it a proper burial.

A man called to report he was the victim of a drive-by fruiting. While driving south on Gulf of Mexico Drive, he reported he heard something hit his passenger window and then saw a mango lying in the road while two juveniles ran away from the scene. Their parents promised it would not happen again.

June 6 "Swamp thing" 7:15 p.m. -- 500 block of Gunwale Lane. Code Enforcement. Police noticed a pool that had turned into a swamp from lack of maintenance and discovered the house was in foreclosure.

May 29 A little off the top 8:49 a.m. -- 500 block of Ranger Lane. Property Damage. A man told police he wished to make a formal complaint after realizing that his neighbor's gardener trimmed a bush 6 inches past the property line. Police reprimanded the gardener, who told police he was not licensed to perform trimming skills. The neighbor was exasperated by the situation, telling police it wasn't "a big deal."

May 24 Extended stay 9:51 a.m. -- 700 block of Tarawitt Drive. Parking Violation. Police observed a 40-foot Bluebird Presidential motor home parked in a front yard. A business card was left on the windshield that advised the owner that an ordinance exists that prohibits motor-home parking for an extended period of time.

May 17 Real Christmas-tree car scent 1:56 a.m. -- 600 block of GMD. Traffic Violation. Police pulled over a woman leaving the Chart House parking lot late at night. It was discovered the woman was a receptionist for a real-estate agency and was working late. Police, however, found it odd that the woman had a dead Christmas tree lying in the back of her car. She said it was too heavy for her to carry.

May 7 Weapon watch 5:43 p.m. -- Off the Key. Assist Other Agency. Sarasota police advised Longboat officers to be on the lookout for a 50-year-old man with brown hair and a mustache walking northbound with a gun in his hand. The man could not be located.

April 22 Lager left behind 6:59 p.m. -- 100 block of GMD. Code Enforcement. A man told police that the cold can of Heineken beer sitting nearby was not his. He then raised it to his lips and said he would drink it anyway because someone had left it behind. He was issued a written warning for drinking a beer on the beach in front of police.

April 17 Feel the burn 2:26 p.m. - 2100 block of GMD. Larceny. Two men were arrested for stealing heartburn medication at a drug store and trying to return it at a grocery store. The Longboat Key Publix store manager positively identified the suspects and the men were taken to the Sarasota Jail.

April 9 Staying grounded 5:24 a.m. -- 400 block of Longboat Club Road. Boat Rescue. Police found a 40-foot fiberglass sailboat and three men stranded near the beach on the south end of the island. The boat owner told police they were on their way to Mississippi when a large wave damaged the boat. The boat ran aground while he tried to maneuver into New Pass. The boat was removed at high tide with the help of a salvage company and several boats.

April 1 Lost in translation 1:41 p.m. -- 10 block of Winslow Place. Parking Violation. A man reported that a landscape crew parked on the shoulder of the road in front of his house. Police called the landscape company's office to let them know the crew, whose members did not speak English, could not park on the grass.

Party problems. 4:34 p.m. -- 100 block of North Shore Road. Code Enforcement. A man reported that three men were on Beer Can Island "partying." Police found the underage suspects in a self-made lean-to with several empty beer cans nearby. The spring breakers were cooperative, and the remaining beer was emptied.

Homesick hound 5:35 p.m. - 700 block of Land's End Drive. Animal Found. A woman told police that she found her neighbor's dog roaming near Whitney Beach Plaza. The dog's owners appeared to be out of town and the neighbor agreed to take the dog until they returned. Later, it was discovered the homesick dog had run away from the sister of the dog's owner.

Traffic Violation. Police pulled over a woman for passing two cars in a right-turn-only lane. Another driver stopped and told police that he was glad she got caught, because she tailgated him and forced him into the emergency lane when she attempted to pass him on the right and come back onto the road. The driver, who received a ticket for reckless driving, told police she was late for an art show at Coquina Beach.

Jan. 21 It's raining vacuums 10:14 p.m. -- Off the Key. Assist Other Agency. Police assisted Bradenton Beach Police with a domestic disturbance call and found a broken wooden table and a vacuum cleaner lying in the driveway. The wife told police she got mad that her husband had been out with a friend and threw the items in the driveway from a second-story balcony. No physical contact had occurred, and police left the scene while keeping an eye on the balcony for flying objects.

Police found a man sleeping on a bench at the intersection of General Harris Street and Gulf of Mexico Drive. He told police he had fallen asleep while listening to a game on the radio and was given a ride to his parents' house on Lyons Lane.

Police found the rear door of the home open and unsanitary living conditions inside. The home was littered with trash. The code enforcement department recently tagged the property.

Jan. 1 Lord of the dance 12:20 a.m. -- 1600 block of GMD. Disturbance. Police responded to a report of a man refusing to leave a New Year's Eve party at a restaurant. Upon arrival, police calmed down a man and got him medical attention after he revealed he was punched by at least two men for dancing with someone's else's girlfriend at the party. Said the man: 'You know us Irishmen, when we like to dance, we're gonna dance, and if we want to fight, we're gonna fight.'

A woman reported that someone stole her crocodile purse valued at $2,000 from the passenger seat of her unlocked car while she was inside a gas station paying for her gas. The purse contained a payroll check, her Social Security card, credit cards, a checkbook and $10 in cash.
